From humble beginnings in 1961 to the vibrant hub it is today, The Metaphysical Shoppe has transformed with the times while keeping its spirit intact. Still family-owned, still rooted in Jersey City, and still guided by the same purpose: to illuminate the path for all who seek it.
In The Beginning
Originally founded as “El Espiritu Santo Botanica,” the shop opened its doors in 1961, lovingly run by “Grandma,” a gifted medium known for her compassion and intuition. Her little shop quickly became a refuge for guidance, blessings, and spiritual support in the heart of Jersey City.
A Legacy Renewed
In 1999, her grandson Gino, a clairvoyant spirit channeler, took the helm to continue the family’s sacred legacy. He renamed the shop Iggi Olorun Botanica, honoring its Afro-Caribbean roots and guiding the space into a new chapter of spiritual tradition and community care.
Urban Revitalization
As Downtown Jersey City transformed, the botanica entered a new chapter. Partnering with the city’s beautification efforts, Gino refreshed he storefront, honoring its spiritual legacy while inviting longtime patrons and new seekers into a brighter, more welcoming space.
A New Mark
As the digital age reshaped community connections, the botanica evolved its
visual identity. A new logo featured a protective circle with three symbolic forms, evoking the clarity of the third eye and the ancestral power of cowrie shells, blending tradition with the forwardmoving rhythm of the era.
A Modern Transformation
Amid the Covid pandemic and the neighborhood’s continued evolution, the botanica embraced a deeper modernization. Honoring its interfaith roots, “Metaphysical” was added to the name, and the interior was refreshed, blending contemporary polish with the warmth and energy that has guided generations of seekers.
Carrying the Light Forward
The botanica’s evolution continues with its refreshed name, The Metaphysical Shoppe. Rooted in its heritage, our interfaith focus welcomes seekers from all walks of life. We launched our online store and expanded readings to include astrology and tarot, continuing a legacy of guidance. The rooster in the window has stood watch since 1961 and remains our faithful protector.
